There is no right or wrong when it comes to picking a color for a Steampunk inspired hair do, the Victorian era didn't have much in the way of hair dye so your natural hair color will work just fine. But, that doesn't mean that you can go crazy with hair and dye your hair any color you like...bright red is very popular and so is purple, but less obvious colors like green can look stunning too. Just be careful with the shade of green, otherwise you'll look like you stepped out of a fish tank.
Achieving really vibrant colors can be quite tricky, so if may be worth getting a professional opinion or maybe some help. Since I don't dye my hair bright amazing colors every day (I have them professional done), I asked a friend who has particularly bright blue hair at the moment and she told me that Manic Panic hair dye is the stuff you want to use.
You can also find yourself some amazing hair styling accessories, such as blow dryers, hair brushes, etc.
Steampunk hair has two core elements: the "up do" and loose curls. The up do can be braided or done with clips, but try not to make it too tight and structured and leave at least a few loose bits to soften the look.
This is where you go nuts, there are a million and one steampunk hair accessories out there, goggles are popular and you can use them to help old your hair in place (like a headband). Top hats are a real statement piece, you'll want one in a dark brown if you're confident enough to pull off the look. If you don't want to go to the whole hog, you could opt for a fascinator, a tiny hat or something more traditionally Victorian will work a treat.
See you next time,
