We all know the names: Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, Snow White and over 200 more!
The fairy tales we all know and love were first published by the Grimm Brothers (Jacob and Wilhem) in 1812. 86 Stories were in the first edition. But, the Grimm Brothers were much more than that! Both were authors - putting out mutual manuscripts, one was a philosopher - known for inventing Grimms Law, the other loved music and studied literature.
These stories were not always what they are now. When they first came out, there was much criticism due to the fact that they were called children's tales, both in subject matter and on a reading level, were not suitable for children at all!
Many things were cut out and changed; like the mothers in Snow White and Hansel and Gretel changed to step-mothers. But, violence in accordance to the villians' were increased.
As for sexuality, well, let's just say the wolf in Little Red Riding Hood didn't want to eat her in the way you always thought growing up.
