Start off with a good scrub. Something that can whisk away flaky skin, but is still very gentle. Use it in the shower, massaging it into the skin wherever it feels rough. If you can't get your hands on a store bought scrub, make your own! There are hundreds of recipes for this all over the internet, but my favorite is just mixing equal parts honey and sugar. It's cheap, effective, and if some "happens" to fall into your mouth while making it, I won't tell.
Now that you've scrubbed off all the scales, you need to lock in moisture to prevent the dreaded dryness from coming back. Use a lotion or cream that has at least two heavy moisturizing ingredients in it (I recommend Shea Butter and Cocoa Butter). Once you step out of the shower, slather your lotion all over, using a little extra on your knees and elbows, where the skin is usually thicker.
After doing these two basic steps, your skin should be soft and smooth, but if there are still a few dry, rough spots, try these ideas:
- Take a large plastic cup of milk when you go to take a bath. After the water has cooled a bit, slowly pour the milk into the bath and soak for a while. Milk contains lactic acid, a natural exfoliant, that can also sooth irritation. This would be ideal for extremely sensitive skin.
- Right before you go to bed, swipe on a light layer of Cocoa Butter. It comes in a stick form (very concentrated), that you can use on small areas.
- Switch to a more moisturizing body wash. Olay, Aveeno, and Softsoap are great choices for dry skin.
Soft, smooth skin, here we come!!
